Conservatory styles: Choosing a Conservatory or Orangery
Let the sunshine in: make the most of natural light by adding a conservatory or orangery to your home. A conservatory is a practical and elegant way to extend your living space without the need for planning permission: at Bergson & Eaton, we offer a range of high-quality, bespoke designs to suit the architectural style of your house.
Why choose to install a Conservatory or Orangery?
• Add value
With property prices rising, many of us are choosing not to move and are concentrating instead on investing in improvements such as a conservatory. A well-designed, quality conservatory is an excellent way to enhance your home: not only do you gain extra-space, but you are also adding to the value of your property.
• Create more space
Whether you’re looking for extra space to create an atmospheric dining room, a tranquil spot for relaxing and admiring your garden, a cosy family TV and games room, or a practical home office, a bespoke conservatory or orangery can offer the perfect solution.
• Improve the visual appeal of your house
A sympathetically designed conservatory can breathe new life into a house, enhancing the exterior as well as providing more space: with the latest innovations such as insulated pillars and tiled roofs, it can become one of the most-used rooms in your home.
Conservatory Styles
Long gone are the days when most conservatories were just bolt-on boxes that were used as sunrooms on warmer days: thanks to the latest developments in high tech glazing and design, modern conservatories can be enjoyed all year round. Our sympathetic designs mean that your conservatory will be an integral part of your home, an interior space that flows seamlessly from a living room or kitchen to become an extension filled with light.
Whether you opt for the traditional elegance of one of our Victorian and Edwardian options or the understated aesthetics of our contemporary lean-to or shaped designs, our experienced designers ensure that your conservatory complements and enhances the architectural style of your home. With an array of materials and finishes to suit every taste, including uPVC, aluminium and timber, you can achieve your own grand designs.
• Victorian
Inspired by late 19th-century architecture, Victorian-style conservatories capture the charm and warmth of days gone by; they are many-sided structures (usually with 3 or 5 sides) with pitched roofs embellished with elaborate cresting’s and finials. This style of conservatory can enhance both old and modern houses, but the period design is best suited to a traditionally built home: it can be fine-tuned to suit your requirements. A dwarf brick-built wall is a popular option as it allows plenty of light in while providing an attractive setting for your furniture; however, if you prefer to maximise sunlight, you have the possibility of fully glazed walls. Elaborate French doors work well with Victorian conservatories, but contemporary bi-fold doors are an option if you want to make the most of your garden view.
• Edwardian
The clean, symmetrical lines of an Edwardian conservatory combine with classical touches to create an understated, timeless design that offers plenty of floor space for furniture or plants. An Edwardian-style conservatory is a perfect choice if you are seeking to create a new dining area, playroom or lounge. Square or rectangular in shape, the simplicity of the design offers an unobstructed view of the outside and allows you to create a seamless transition between your house and garden. Because decorative touches are kept to a minimum, this style complements both new and old buildings.
• Lean to
The stylish, understated lean-to conservatory is a fuss-free structure with an angled roof that gives the conservatory the appearance of leaning against the house, hence the name. This style recalls the feel of a Mediterranean sunroom and is ideal for bungalows and houses where height is restricted: it can easily be adapted to create a light-filled room in many “awkward” spaces. While a lean-to conservatory may be characterised by a minimalist aesthetic, options such as underfloor heating, the latest double glazing and different coloured finishes make it the perfect way to enhance your home.
• Shaped
If the traditional designs above aren’t quite roomy enough for your requirements, you can choose to combine a Victorian or Edwardian conservatory with a rectangular lean to give a shaped design, often referred to as an L-shaped or P-shaped conservatory. This bespoke design offers maximum floor space while minimising the loss of garden area and lends itself to multiple uses such as a kitchen-dining room or playroom-sitting room. Both sections can be the same size or one larger than the other: the choice is yours.
