Getting Your Conservatory Ready for Christmas

Christmas is just around the corner, so it’s time to start thinking about transforming your conservatory into a winter wonderland. Whether as the perfect setting for festive gatherings with family and friends, or a cosy, welcoming retreat where you can relax with a mince pie and a glass of something warming. While snowflakes drift across your wintry garden, your conservatory extension really comes into its own, especially at Christmas time. To get your conservatory ready for Christmas, follow our tips for seasonal decorating…

Go Rustic

The large windows and glass doors of an orangery or conservatory extension make the most of the low natural winter light, and the extra space it offers is particularly welcome at Christmas. In days gone by, many conservatories were too chilly to be used much in the winter months but today’s advances in thermal glass and insulated roofs mean that now you can enjoy your extra space all year round. Create a comforting, rustic ambience for your guests with snuggly throws, cushions and rugs to bring warmth and texture to your decor. Hand-painted wooden tree decorations on the tree and tea lights on the windowsill bring a cosy, authentic feel, while spicy scented candles or a jug of mulled wine pervade the room with their nostalgic fragrance.

Bring the Outside In

At a time of year when it’s lovely to snuggle up inside, you can still enjoy the beauty of the winter landscape by bringing the outside in. The traditional Christmas colours of red, green, gold and silver look wonderful against a frosty backdrop and blend well with wood, bamboo or rattan furniture. Real greenery such as wreaths of holly, ivy and pinecones create a link with the garden, while birch twigs and Christmas plants such as poinsettia and cyclamen carry through the natural aesthetic.

The Tree

The high ceiling of an orangery creates a perfect backdrop for a tall Christmas tree decked with twinkling lights – in fact, some of our customers have even designed their new extension with room for a Christmas tree as one of their must-have design criteria’s. And if you’re someone who likes to have a tree in every room, you now have the opportunity to add one more! A real tree with pine-scented needles is the ideal way to bring the outside in, but artificial trees are so realistic these days they look equally effective. If you don’t have blinds, the lights of the tree will be reflected in the windows as night falls, doubling their twinkling lights and atmosphere.

Fairy Lights, Snowflakes and Stars

Use fairy lights to make your orangery or conservatory really sparkle during the festive season. Lights also create a warm, welcoming feel, encouraging you to spend more time there as twilight falls. Fix them around the top of the walls or across the windows – our conservatories and orangeries are designed with plenty of electric sockets, so you can be as creative as you like. Self-adhesive hooks are an easy way to fix fairy lights and other decorations without damaging surfaces. Star and snowflake decorations suspended from the ceiling really add to the Christmassy feel.

Window Decorations and Christmas Cards

It’s often a problem to know where to display all your Christmas cards. Add a festive feel to your extension by displaying some of them on the windowsill or in a special holder. And in a room with a large expanse of glass, why not make the most of it with stick-on window decorations and artificial snow.

Serve Up Christmas Dinner in Style

For many of us, the best part of the day is the whole family getting together for Christmas dinner. If you’re tired of squeezing in extra places in a cramped dining area, a garden room or an orangery offers an elegant setting for Christmas lunch. The centrepiece of the day is, of course, the food but a seasonal table runner and napkins in red or gold will add a touch of colour, while sparkling glasses and chinaware catch the light. Add a few candles or tea lights for a finishing, Christmassy touch.
